Regulated, Accredited and Reviewed
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a confidential meeting where you speak with a qualified family mediator before making a court application about arrangements for children or finances following separation.
The meeting typically lasts around 45 minutes. Your mediator will explain how mediation works, discuss your situation, and help you understand whether mediation could be a suitable way forward for resolving your family dispute.
In most cases, attending a MIAM is a legal requirement before you can apply to court. The mediator will provide you with a signed Section 4 of your C100 form, which you need for your court application if mediation is not appropriate or the other party refuses to attend.

What to Expect at Your MIAM
Knowing what happens during the meeting helps you feel prepared and get the most out of your appointment.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Bring a pen and paper to make notes during the meeting. You cannot record the session, but note-taking is encouraged to help you remember the information shared.
What We Will Discuss
The mediator will ask about your current situation, including what has led to this point, how you and any children are managing, and your relationship with the other party. We will explore whether mediation might work for you and address any concerns you have about the process.
Safety and Wellbeing Checks
Your safety is our priority. The mediator will ask detailed questions to ensure we can provide a safe environment for both parties throughout the mediation process. If domestic abuse or coercive control is a concern, please tell us at the start so we can take appropriate steps.
Next Steps and Costs
The mediator will explain what happens after your MIAM, including timescales and costs for joint mediation sessions. We will invite the other party to attend their own MIAM unless you have specific reasons for us not to do so, which we will formally record. If you need a court form signed at any point after your MIAM, this costs £55 plus VAT.
Bringing Support
You are welcome to have someone with you for support during your MIAM. The mediator may need to speak with you privately to confirm you are comfortable with their presence. Please note that you cannot bring the other party to the dispute with you, as regulations require separate MIAMs for each person.
MIAM Validity Period
MIAMs remain valid for four months from the date of your meeting. If you are applying to court, your MIAM or last joint mediation session must have taken place within the four months immediately before your application. If your MIAM has expired and you need a court form signed, please contact us to discuss your options.
Online MIAM Requirements
For online appointments, please ensure you have a stable internet connection. The mediator may need to end the call if your connection is not sufficient. You must be in a private, suitable location, not driving or in a public space such as a cafe. The mediator will initiate all calls, so please do not phone back if disconnected. If you have someone supporting you, they will need to leave briefly during the safety and welfare section. Recording the meeting is not permitted.
£500 Mediation Voucher
If your case involves arrangements for children, the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme can fund your first joint mediation session with a voucher worth up to £500. There is no means test, and the voucher is applied directly to your fees by Mediate UK.
